Psychotherapy

The diagnosis of cancer is a stressful event that demands both physical and psychological adjustment. Every individual diagnosed with cancer, as well as his or her family members, undergo an emotional upheaval.

Discussing issues related to diagnosis and treatment with a Licensed Clinical Social Worker can help one discover specific solutions and develop strategies for coping and problem-solving, as well as discover ways to cope with illness, reduce stress, and learn about community resources.  Debbie Duggan, L.C.S.W, and Sandy Schindler, L.C.S.W, are available to meet with both patients and families to deal with some of the psychological needs that arise during the various phases of the illness.

Oncology Social Workers bring a broad range of knowledge and skills that can assist both patients and families.  By developing an intervention that allows them to understand a patients' response to chronic illness within the context of their own family unit, the social worker can help with specific concerns and set achievable goals to mitigate the disruption a cancer diagnosis can have for not only the patient, but also spouses, parents, children, and siblings.
